I managed to get my hands on my daughter's digital camera and took some pics of the sprouts and of the roots that I got from Spring Hill Nursery.

I'm a little frustrated this morning since some of the seedlings need to be transplanted but I'm working under a waning moon. I should wait 2 weeks for the waxing moon in Taurus. I'm thinking of having my son try to transplant on compartment of his catnip this afternoon when the moon goes into Scorpio. If they don't take, we'll still have others to try again in 2 weeks.

Deutschland Astilbe
03.25.05 (4:05 am)   [edit]
I woke up this morning and the root I got from Spring Hill Nursery is a completely different plant!
There are about 5 shoots coming up about 1"

On the sprout front...
03.24.05 (4:06 am)   [edit]
Two days ago, I saw my first Echinacea sprout. Need to take care...as there is only one (I planted 4 sections of each seed type).
Still nothing from the brugmansia or datura...and surprisingly, nothing from the nicotiana sylvestris. The other two types of tobacco sprouted last week. I'll try to plant seeds again during the May/Taurus New moon.

I've posted a pic in my links of my preliminary ideas for how I want my garden laid out. One by one, I'll add the plants to the drawing. It's a matter of how much sun each plant needs and how many actual plants I end up with.

BTW- the Spring Hill Nursery plants are doing great! Especially the Bleeding Heart....a lot of sprouting going on from the root they sent. Still waiting to see what becomes of the astilbe....

Books and articles on Moon Gardening
03.20.05 (4:56 am)   [edit]
While waiting for my sprouts and plants to come to life, I've decided to post out about the books I'm reading on the subject of evening, moon or night gardens (different names depending on the source).

Planning & Planting a Moon Garden

by Marcella Shaffer

This isn't as much a book as it is a 32 page brochure. Still, it's not bad and a good beginning for anyone. Gives ideas for plants, designs and embellishments for a moon garden. This book is no longer listed at Storey Books, but you can find used copies online for under $3.

And here's an article by P. Allen Smith about night blooming plants:

2nd blog entry today
03.19.05 (5:01 am)   [edit]
Sorry...I need to post this info before I forget:

Several weeks ago, I received a Spring Hill Nursery catalog in the mail. It had a coupon for $25. So, if you spent less than $25, you got your order for free. I ordered three plants for my moon garden and got them a couple days ago:
Phlox
Bleeding Heart
Astilbe

Since the waxing moon is in Cancer, I've been trying to get these roots planted. I have one more to go but need more potting soil.

On another note: I'll be interested to see how these plants turn out. Spring Hill Nursery doesn't get very high marks at Dave's Garden Watchdog

Moon Flower
03.19.05 (3:20 am)   [edit]
This morning I noticed the Moon Flower has sprouted. It's one of the plants that I most look forward to this summer. I've already explained to my husband the type of trellis that I'd like him to build for this particular vine. Though the flowers look half dead in the daytime, moon flowers are awesome at night!

Also, I was informed that my Purple fountain grass is not purple. It's white. Thanks again Victoria....

Another sprout, watering and warmth
03.18.05 (3:25 am)   [edit]
Yesterday, I discovered the smallest sprout from the Purple Fountain Grass. Woohoo!
Another Master Gardener had told me she grew this same plant in a container, but lost it over winter. Funny, from what I've read, in the warmer zones (9+) this plant is invasive. Guess I won't have that problem here in zone 7a....
My tray of seeds/sprouts is in my south facing double window that you see in the pic of the back of my house. I put a thermometer inside the lid of the tray the other day. On a SUNNY day, the inside tray temp gets between 85-90* F. I'm really happy the cats haven't managed to knock it over yet.
My quest right now is to keep the seed's environment warm and moist while trying not to over water after a warm day in the sun.

More sprouting
03.16.05 (7:21 am)   [edit]
This morning I found the Flowering tobacco and the Indian tobacco have sprouted. Also, the foxglove & iberis (candytuft). It seems the more exotic plants are going to take time: Brugmansia, datura, purple fountain grass, dutchman's pipe vine, etc....

Check my log in the links to see planting and sprouting dates.

Baby's Breath sprouting
03.14.05 (7:43 am)   [edit]
The Baby's Breath (Gypsophila) sprouted today.

My son's catnip is 3/4" high and was thinned down to 2 per compartment.

The alyssum is about 1/2" high and was also thinned down this morning.

FYI- the seed tray sits in front of a south facing window.

Sunday morning Moon garden happenings
03.13.05 (5:50 am)   [edit]
Good Morning,

Yesterday, I created a webpage at amazon.com with 4 books related to Moon Gardening. I own one of them....I have one checked out from the library...and I'll pick up another one from the library today.

I've also uploaded a word document that I created this morning that lists the seeds and their necessary info so that I don't have to go digging through packets everytime I need info. I'm going to add a link to the left.

On the *sprout* front, I'm happy to report that I saw two Alyssum sprouts this morning....

Good News and Bad News
03.12.05 (10:49 am)   [edit]
The good news is that we have sproutage!
:D
The bad news is that it's my 11 yr. old son's catnip seeds that I let him plant in the tray that are sprouting....

New Moon: Time to start seeds
03.10.05 (4:22 am)   [edit]
The New Moon was in Pisces, a water sign, at 4:11 am this morning. This is a perfect time to start my seeds in an indoor tray.
I bought a 72 count seed starter tray and will be planting:
Dutchman pipe vine, Nicotiana sylvestris, Datura wrightii, Brugmansia alba, Pennisetum setaceum, Baby's breath, Candytuft, Carpet of Snow (Alyssum), Nicotiana Alata, Four O'clocks, Moonflower, Rock Cress, Foxglove, Echinacea purpurea

I've posted pics of the intended site of my garden. I live in a twin home with back of the house facing south. The deck is going to be changed to a 12x12 room with an adjoining deck under the double window.

Wish me luck!
